I was having trouble with basic note progression. One evening we sat down and clapped out the beats. That made it a lot clearer. I didn't have to focus on whether or not my fingers made it to the right note in time...we just focused on when the beat was to be hit. I found that to be a big help!

(It was one of those light bulb moments)
