How about listing all of the positions you have in the band and maybe the members of the band. For example....

1st Flute John Doe
2nd Flute Jane Doe
3rd Flute Jack Doe

And then after all that, on the same page put the positions that need to be filled. It would give recognition to those in the band and help bring in new members too. Just a suggestion. [Linked Image from carfaxabbey.net]

Listing the members in the band sounds good to me. I don't know how the rest of the band feels about this, but personally, I don't dig the whole "1st, 2nd, 3rd chair" thing. Competition is all well and good, but it seems to me it can be taken too far, and sometimes overshadows one of the main points of playing in a band (being cooperation). Any other opinions?

I do at least like the idea of listing the members and what instrument they play. That doesn't seem too territorial. [Linked Image from carfaxabbey.net]

I posted too soon....

I need to add that sometimes we switch off first and second flute pieces, depending on what we know we can play, and who really wants to play it this time. On some pieces I prefer first flute to second and vice-versa.

It's really nice of you Macgyver, to want to give credit to everyone. But I don't think we really know who to give credit to. Except to those instruments that we only have 1 of. Like Oboe, French Horn....what else do we have only 1 of??

I agree with everyone about posting the names and instruments that each person plays. It may help us get some more people if someone sees that one of their friends is involved with us.

We also switch who plays 1st or 2nd or 3rd for various songs. that way everybody gets a chance to play 1st sometimes. Besides if we are all honest, we probably know who should play which part for each song. The main point is to cover all the parts.

You have my vote to post the sections and who's playing in the section. Just don't list 1st, 2nd, 3rd as we really don't have any division like that. But be aware, I feel we need to get written permission from parents/guardians before posting any minor's name. Also getting "big" peoples permission is good too. beth, who is the designated 3rd clarinet! :-)

Sounds like a great idea. It looks good and profesional to see our group in an organizational chart.
