To the editor:
On March 15 we attended the All-Shore Band concert at Nandua High School.
We are not native Eastern Shore residents, nor do we have children of relatives or friends in school, but we felt this event was worthy of our support.
It was a wonderful performance from some of the finest young musicians on the Eastern Shore. These students and their parents should be very proud.
Not only was it good, it was free.
There was a crowd of parents, relatives and friends but the auditorium was not filled. Younger school children, whether or not they play an instrument would have benefited by hearing what diligence and practice sound like.
Before the concert it was announced that band members had practiced five to six hours over two days.
The speaker said that while that may not seem like a lot, it was all these students needed because "they are that good."
He was right. These young people were that good and better.
We did not see media coverage, except for an events notice and don't know why there wasn't coverage or a story.
Publicity can go a long way to foster public support and awareness of school events.
One of the conductors said that the past three years the number of All-Shore Band participants has been declining to its now lowest level. He hoped this cycle was not a trend, but feared it might be, as school music programs are reduced. He predicted that if it continues, there may not be an All-Shore Band.
It would be sad to lose this wonderful event, unfair to youngsters who may not have a chance to participate, and a loss for listeners.
Please support music programs in your schools, support children in learning to appreciate music, and most of all support students by attending the concert next year.
Hopefully there will be a next year.

I grew up with All Shore, and hate the idea that it might be dieing in my first couple of years as a teacher. Just remember that it isn't just All Shore that is in jeopardy. All of our school music programs are in dire straits.

This involves all directors and students involved, as well as the administration. There have been some lean years but the "SOL scare" has really hurt the bands, along with the 4x4 block schedule. | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 663 Jedi Master | OP Jedi Master Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 663 | From my research into things, the 4x4 block schedule is the fastest way to destroy an arts program...I'll start a new topic on this.

But my little brother is totally siked to join band after hearing our guest conductor say his speech. He'll start band next year in sixth grade.
