Learn your Chromatic Scale. This is THE most important scale you can learn on your instrument. Play it evenly and with a confident tone.
Practice your breath support. Make your tone strong and breathe from the "bottom of your lungs". Your abdomen should be tight, as if you were doing a sit-up. Let that firmness in your "abs" be the strength of your tone. Use it to help you push through to the ends of phrases.
Brush up on your scales.
Take the time to learn them all backward and forward, then in 3rds (Don't know what I mean? Ask me!)
Have someone drill you on them. Then work on your tone.
Play the scales slowly with a crescendo/decrscendo on every degree of the scale.
Work on articulations. Do the 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Exercise on each scale.
With work, each of you can do well at auditions. And, the more you practice, the more confident you will become. If you practice enough, you won't be nervous at all for the audition.
10 minutes of smart practice a day is better than an hour of practice. What do I mean by smart practice?
Don't waste time practicing mistakes.
Take the time to learn your music PERFECTLY the first time.
If you don't understand something, don't guess. Find out exactly how to play it so you learn it correctly the first time.
Get into the habit of learning your dynamics from the beginning.
Learn all articulations from the beginning. Don't just slur everything.
Once you have it down PERFECTLY at a slow speed, start speeding it up. If you can't play it a little faster perfectly, then you still need to repeat it at a slower tempo.
Many aspects of music involve "muscle memory". The more the action is repeated, the more neural pathways are strengthened.
If you have a metronome, a good rule of thumb to go by is 5 perfect repetitions before increasing the speed. When you increase, only go a few clicks at a time.

I tried out for Governor's School last year and it really put All-Shore into perspective. I'm not saying its really easy or that I don't get nervous, but maybe everyone should try out for regionals or something and then All-Shore auditions will be a little more enjoyable. | | |
